IVA HOST GLOBAL WARMING LUNCHEON FOR LEGISLATORS
On Earth Day yesterday, I had the privilege of hosting about 20 Idaho lawmakers for a briefing session on the mythical dangers of global warming.
I screened for them a 48-minute documentary - “Global Warming: A scientific and biblical expose of climate change” - featuring scientists from different disciplines, including a former meteorologist from NASA.
The scientists made several points. First, CO2 does not drive global warming – rising CO2 levels in the atmosphere are a result of warming, not a cause (warming oceans release CO2 into the atmosphere).
Second, global temperatures are driven primarily by output from the sun and other naturally occurring cycles.
Third, warming temperatures and increasing levels of CO2 have beneficial effects: longer growing seasons, increased plant productivity, fewer human deaths from exposure to cold.
Fourth, artificially curbing carbon emissions will trap billions around the world in a mire of poverty, disease and death when their crying need is for accessible and affordable energy.
Because of those who have generously supported the IVA, we’ve been able to provide helpful and important educational information to those who hold the levers of power in Idaho. Thank you!
GOOD NEWS: CONSERVATIVE CHRISTIANS LEAST GULLIBLE ON GLOBAL WARMING HYPE
According to the Pew Forum, just 34% of white evangelical Protestants believe that there is solid evidence the earth is warming. The religiously unaffiliated, on the other hand, are the most easily duped, buying the alarmist message to the tune of 58%.
EARTH DAY FACTOIDS FROM DR. ROY SPENCER
- Is global warming happening now? No one knows because of year-to-year climate fluctuations, but temperatures stopped rising in 2001 and may be entering a significant cooling trend.
- Is it warmer now than in thousands of years? No--and it was probably significantly warmer in the Medieval Warm Period.
- Does declining Arctic sea ice evidence manmade global warming? Warming, yes; manmade, no, and
recent trends are not significantly different from those of the 1930s.
- Is Arctic sea ice melt rate increasing? No.
- Is Antarctic sea ice diminishing? No.
- Is CO2 a dangerous gas? "Well, if you breathe pure CO2, you will die--from a lack of oxygen, not because CO2 is poisonous. But if you breathe pure oxygen for very long, that will also kill you. Carbon dioxide is necessary for life on Earth; photosynthesis by plants on land and by plankton in the ocean depend on it. And without these forms of life, all the animals (and we humans) would die as well."
- How much has CO2 risen as a percentage of the atmosphere since 1958? Not much: from a little under 1/2 of 1/10 of 1% to a little over 1/2 of 1/10 of 1%.
- Is CO2 the main greenhouse gas? No, it's about 3% of the greenhouse effect; water vapor (85% to 90%) and clouds (5% to 10%) outweigh it by far.
- How much warming would doubled CO2 cause? Not more than 1 degree Centigrade (1/3 the central estimate of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which depends on computer models that wrongly count clouds as a positive feedback; Spencer's satellite data show they're negative).
IVA IN THE NEWS
I also had the privilege yesterday of doing a radio interview with David Barton and Rick Green for the Wallbuilders program, in which I discussed the genetic argument against evolution. The only mechanism evolution offers for developing increasingly complex life forms is genetic mutation, but naturally occurring mutations are virtually always harmful if not fatal to the organism.
